Using Biographies To Increase Informational Text Fluency

My Students

The new common core standards encourage informational text reading along with literature. Biographies are a big focus for us in first grade and my students have enjoyed reading about some famous people this year. Unfortunately, I did not have access to a lot of biographies on their levels.

I have a very bright group of first graders.

We love to read and learn new things. The majority of students in my class are identified gifted learners. They are always seeking to explore deeper and deeper into whatever we are studying. It is great to have a group that is so intelligent and who want to learn! We do a lot of extra projects, so we always need supplies for research. I check out a mountain of books from the library on a regular basis. Sometimes it is really hard to find biographies and content specific books, like science books on sound or magnets, that are on a low enough reading level that even my exceptionally bright first graders can read independently. We are located within a few miles of a major military installation. Many of my students come from active military families. Even though we have students moving in and out throughout the year, our school always feels like a home. We have great teachers and parents who really care.

My Project

I have chosen biographies of famous people that my students will be able to read independently. I chose books on famous musicians and composers, television personalities, P\presidents, inventors, scientists, authors, artists, athletes, and other historical figures. I am especially excited about the books on inventors and the biographies of authors. Our 2nd quarter English/Language Arts unit is on inventors and we also read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I can not wait until the children get to read biographies of Thomas Edison, George Washington Carver, Alexander Graham Bell, and others. They enjoyed learning about them so much, but we did not have biographies of them that they could read in our library. I am also excited about the biography of Roald Dahl because after we finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, many of my self-motivated learners checked out some of his other books from the library. I am sure they are going to be thrilled to learn more about him!

My students love to learn and they really deserve the opportunity to gather as much knowledge as they can.

I have tried to keep books in our classroom that are adequate and appropriate, but it would be wonderful to have this selection at our fingertips to use whenever we wanted throughout the year. This will allow my students to learn about important people, gain informational text fluency, develop research and report writing skills, and so much more. This would make a huge difference.
