Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Dr. Montessori told us, “The essence of independence is to be able to do something for one’s self.” My students are majority English Language Learners. These beautifully constructed leveled readers will assist my students in building their reading skills and English language development.
The majority of my students are English Language Learners whose families are from Columbia, El Salvador, and other Central and South American countries.
The school's neighborhood is in a borough of Boston which is diverse linguistically, culturally and socioeconomically. Some of the students are just beginning to learn English. All of the children are warm, generous and eager-to-learn. Our school is our district's first public Montessori school. As such, we are committed to high achievement through Montessori’s time-tested philosophy and methods. Montessori’s pedagogy maximizes the child's intrinsic motivation to learn. In this way, the teacher serves as a guide to the child’s development: socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively. The goal of the method is for children to grow into life-long learners and productive citizens of the world. We are a small, neighborhood school of less than 100 students. Most of the children walk to and from the school each day with their parents.
My Project
My students range in age from 3 to 6, as is typical for Montessori primary classrooms. All of my students will engage with these books. The youngest will learn print concepts such as directionality, book handling, word tracking, and letter recognition.
Older students will use the books to gradually build their repertoire of reading skills, including sight word recognition, decoding, syntax and context clues. Since the collection is both fiction and non-fiction and aligned with the goals of the Common Core, the students will learn about literary devices and engage with required content areas. Texts will be used for small guided reading groups as well as one-on-one reading and independent reading time.
To be a full participant in the 21st century, you must be literate.
Donations to help purchase this high quality set of leveled readers will help open the door to reading for these young learners.
