Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Where words fail, music speaks" - H.C.A.
After each concert, students launch into stations. That means that students spent about fifteen minutes at four stations that help them to strengthen skills such as composing, reading music, playing recorder or piano, and ear training.
My students are curious, hard-working individuals.
Our school is 99% Hispanic and bilingual. The majority of our students receive free breakfast each day. They rarely make excuses, and neither do their parents. They are proud of the work they accomplish on a day-to-day basis.
My Project
I'm anxious to get the students behind the keyboard to do group instruction in piano since we have the books now. Piano gives them a chance to improvise and read musical notation in addition to singing and playing recorder. It's a good opportunity for them to have experience with another instrument. They are already very familiar with the blues scales, and have taken to improvisation on a 12 bar blues with ease.
Playing keyboard lets the students have a little more ownership in their learning, which is so important.
They also enjoy improvising on instruments. Developing a deeper understanding of jazz and the blues is something we are always seeking to do in Chicago.
