My students need a collection of tools to help start the MakerSpace we're outfitting in our school, including (but not limited to) Dremels, wrenches and safety goggles.

Ideas are powerful, but I want my students to create physical manifestations of their learning. What good is it to learn something if you can't turn it into anything?
Our school is incredibly diverse, pulling motivated and bright students from all over Philadelphia.
They come here from different locations and different backgrounds to create a space where they can experience things together in a positive environment. My physics students, specifically, are incredibly curious and motivated. They love to solve problems and relish opportunities to create.
My Project
By outfitting our school with a MakerSpace/Engineering Lab, we will have a place where students can create things and gain experience with construction, metalworking, woodworking and electronics. I can't say specifically what they'll build, but that's the beauty of the space itself - it's designed for students to explore and create together.
The eventual plan is for students to explore programming, electronics, robotics and also build and repair things for the school itself. Think shop class with no limits, designed for awesome motivated nerds!
Students need to know that the things they use every day aren't magical.
They're designed and created and built by people who are just like themselves. It's my hope that developing a space like this will inspire students to be creative participants in their own worlds. The things they own are hackable and can be customized to suit their own needs. I want my students to leave our school excited to engineer the world around them, either professionally or recreational.
