My Students

At our school we learn how to take care of the planet and our music instruments!

My students attend an environmentally conscious charter school in Queens, NY.

Students are passionate about changing the world for the better. They have been taking care of the instruments we have already purchased in the past. They are aware they have a big privilege in having them in music class and they want to pass this privilege on to the upcoming generations joining our school in the future. Students come from the most diverse backgrounds. The Orff-Schulwerk approach and these instruments will allow us to "travel all over the world" and discover different kinds of music and traditions. In the past years we have invested our music budget to purchase Orff instruments to build a bigger set. Every class has 28/29 students. Our goal is to make sure every student can play one instrument at a time.

My Project

During our music lesson, students work in groups of 4 at their compositions or when they study Orff-Schulwerk compositions. Each group has 2 Orff instruments available, a combinations of different Xylophones, Metallophones, and Glockenspiels we collected over the years thanks to Donors Choose donations or to our department budget. As of now, each time we have music two groups end up working with one instrument only. Students voted that Glockenspiels are their favorite instruments.

We decided to start this Donors Choose project to make sure all groups will have 2 Orff instruments available when working in small groups of four.

This will allow us to get better at performing ours and Orff's compositions sooner!
