My Students

Could you imagine going through life without thinking reading is fun? Well this is what is happening in my classroom, and I want to instill in my students that literature can take you places you have never been. I want them to know that literature is what you make it, and I MAKE IT FUN!

I teach three blocks of high school students from all grades in my culinary arts class.

I have 86 of the most energetic and easy to love teenagers in the world. My students are diligent and hard working, and they strive for greatness daily. Teaching these students are a constant reminder of the capabilities of the changing world and it is truly and honor to educate them daily. My school is an academy school, so not only do we teach basic literacy, math, social studies, science, etc., we also place strong emphasis on life skills, interview skills, creativity, professionalism, and career support. At my high school, we help students find the right career path according to their interest which makes us more unique than any other school in the district.

My Project

These materials will be used to integrate literacy into the culinary arts curriculum. My students will be reading this book (To Kill a Mockingbird) in class, and using the text, create recipes based off the contents of the books. My students will not only learn basic cooking concepts throughout the course, but they will be open to the concept that reading can be fun and creative. This will be a semester long project encouraging independence, life skills, and of course creativity.

This project will hopefully introduce my students to the more entertaining world of reading.

Sadly, students in my classroom do not find the art of reading to be enjoyable. They look at it as dreadful task or job that has to completed, because "the teacher" said so. I would hope that it would encourage my students to continue to be creative especially in the kitchen! It will also help to raise literacy scores which are below average at my school.
