What is art? Is it drawing, is it clay, is it paint? Every year our students study mythology, along with Ancient Greece and Rome. Last year we were able to get clay through generous donors. We would love to again do clay sculpting and introduce students to the world of sculpting 3D art.
Our students are wonderful artists, but they only get art class 50 minutes once a week.
The beautiful drawings and creations they make can be found outside our classrooms. They are so proud of each creation. As teachers we are always looking for ways to creatively involve art into our language arts, science, social studies, and math lessons. 50% of our students are free and reduced lunch, and there is not additional budget money to be used for art projects.
My Project
I am requesting 25 buckets of clay, 6 sets of tempera paint, 20 brushes, and 6 tablecloths to make mythology come alive!
As a third grade team we study ancient mythology, along with Greece and Rome. Students learn about their culture, their foods, their landforms, and their art. After researching, writing, and learning about Greece and Rome, it would be amazing to then have students design and create their sculptures. We would also love to invite high school art students down to our classrooms to help work with our students as they create their sculptures. When complete we would have an art show where each classroom would showcase their art to the other third grade classrooms and invite parents in to view the sculptures. This project connects literacy, social studies, art, and positive parent connections.
Art is not one specific thing.
Art is design, it is creation, it is drawing, it is clay, it is paint, it is so much. These sculptures would give our students just a little taste of more art. These sculptures can introduce students to a 3D world of art while cementing their learning of ancient Rome and Greece.
