The story of a life-long reader begins with one word. My students will grow into lifelong readers because they develop a love of language. Help us build our community by building future readers and leaders.
I teach 44 second graders in a Title I school in an Texas urban setting.
My class is an inclusion classroom with several students receiving special education services for learning, emotional, and cognitive issues. Students in our school face many challenges, chief among them - poverty. Many of my students know firsthand the pain of hunger, fear, loss, and chaos. They are raised in families with two parents, step parents, foster parents, single parents, incarcerated parents, and grandparents. They go home to houses, apartments, and sometimes motel rooms. School is often the only safe and structured place they can go. More than 95 percent of my students are also minorities with 70 percent or more with English as a second language. Even with so many challenges, the students still come to school each day with a smile and a hug, eager to have a great day!
By supporting our project, you'll help students start each day on a wonderful new learning carpet. Our classroom carpet is the center of our class. We use it as a gathering place for stories, meetings, and lessons. With a new carpet, students will be able to sing and dance to reinforce skills, partner and discuss stories, and cozy up with a pillow to enjoy a good book. Students also learn to practice self control and the importance of personal space by using the colored squares. This carpet assists in developing phonological awareness because it includes letters and a picture to match the letter sound. Having a new carpet also gives the class a warm and inviting atmosphere for learning. Our carpet would be used throughout the day, and my students would be thrilled to have a new, beautiful rug to call our own. Help us say goodbye to our old, fraying, ratty and stained carpet. Our 30-something hand-me-down has seen it best days and is ready to retire. Help us put it out to pasture.
Enliven and invigorate our classroom with the addition of a new classroom learning carpet.
My kids see so much sadness outside of school that I want them to have a safe, colorful, and clean classroom environment. Help spark a love of learning and engage lifelong readers in a caring classroom environment. Our carpet is the heart of our classroom and we are in desperate need of a transplant.
