A typical day in my classroom is full of high school students who desire lessons relevant and meaningful to their lives. One of the biggest challenges I face is convincing them that the required Economics course I teach is relevant to their lives whether they attend college or enter the workforce.
My students are typical teenagers who love both art and music.
They have strong cultural ties to their communities. They also thrive on technology and socializing. Our high poverty school is located in a rural, small town in Mississippi and is a feeder school to several smaller communities. Many of my students receive free lunch, ride the bus an hour to and from school, and have jobs. Some of my students must work to help support their families. A small percentage of our student body will attend college, some will join the military, and most will go to work full-time. They love projects that relate to lessons and I believe that using art in the classroom helps them learn both visually and kinesthetically. I am passionate about my students and want to provide them with the tools necessary to become productive citizens in the community.
To empower my students through art, they will use the portable whiteboard and wireless interactive whiteboard system in class for presentations. In my class, we do not have a whiteboard, a dry erase board or a chalkboard. We are in a computer lab that was split in half to make more room this year. We currently use white paper taped to the wall to project presentations on, but my students would love an interactive whiteboard. As part of "Empowering students with Art", we will be learning how art and culture are both vital to economic growth in a community, our state, and nation. Students will be tasked with documenting economic assets within their communities. They will use photography, video, music, graffiti, etc. to share with their peers how art and culture play a role in their communities. We will compare and contrast their findings to help them gain a better understanding of the importance of art and culture to the economy.
Your donations will empower my students through art as it relates to our economy.
Today, many states are shifting their focus to arts and culture to create a creative economy. Arts and culture are vital to the economic success of a place and connecting people from. diverse backgrounds to bring about change. I believe this lesson that will prove relevant and meaningful to my students as they see their towns differently. These resources will provide my students with much needed technology.
