Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Ships at harbor are safe, but that is not what ships are built for," stated John Shedd. My students need a classroom library in order to expand their knowledge of the outside world and see how individuals have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles in order to reach his or her full potential.
My students next year will come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnic groups, and cultures.
The parents of my first grade students have made the choice to enter their children into a lottery for a chance at attending a charter school. My school is focused on the success of all students and building a solid foundation for students to attend college. While I have not met my future students yet, I believe in early preparation to ensure that all of my students will experience success.
My Project
In the fall I will begin my first year of teaching socioeconomically disadvantaged students at a charter school in Texas. During my graduate school studies and working with at-risk students, I have witnessed the importance of literature for not only helping students to become fluent readers, but also for inspiring them to follow their dreams and reach their full potential.
By having a classroom library stocked with different non-fiction texts about America, multicultural stories, science readers, and autobiographies, my students will be able to learn about a world that they may have felt was outside of their reach. I believe that through exposure to these non-fiction texts, I can help to inspire my students to become active citizens in our community and nation.
By providing a classroom library for my students, you are not only investing in their future, but also the future of their community.
These students need all of the opportunities that can be afforded them in order to succeed and pursue their dreams.
