The Chemistry of Raku Art

My students need a raku kiln and materials to create art.

My Students

There are many opportunities for cross curricular connections. In art, there is a specific chemistry that explains the unique finishes of a the Raku process. Getting art and chemistry students on a combined project will help both subjects form a lasting impression.

The chemistry and art classes get a wide variety of students since they are electives.

Although art and science are required for graduation, there are many courses to choose from to get the credit. Having practical and hands on opportunities and a technical explanation reaches both groups enhancing the learning process.

My Project

In order for this project to happen, one day will be set aside in each class for the art teacher to explain pinch pots and raku history to the chemistry classes, and one day for the chemistry teacher to explain the reduction process during the reaction the raku glazes undergo during the firing. The kiln is designed to be moved outside and heat quickly. After spending time making pinch pots and glazing the pieces, we will all meet outside to quickly heat up the projects and place them in a container full of combustibles. The heat and smoke and enthusiasm will match the beautiful finishes the students will see on their pinch pots.

The yearly budgets are not set up to make large expenditures for equipment.

By donating to this project, you will allow the two departments to acquire a kiln and equipment unattainable in a short period. There are approximately 500 students each year that will be a part of using this equipment and experiencing the rake firing and the explanation of the reduction process that happens in the combustible containers.
