This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This project will empower my students through art by integrating art with government and economics by creating campaign posters as we learn about the election process and upcoming election. The senior class slogan is "Go B16 or Go Home". In my class, we will "Go B16" everyday to learn!
My students live in rural Mississippi and attend a feeder school for several small outlying communities.
We are a high poverty school with 575 students in which most receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students ride the bus an hour to and from school each day. My students struggle with adverse situations outside of school, which makes it difficult for them to focus on education. As educators, we are challenged with helping them to understand the value of a high school diploma to their future success. One of my biggest challenges is obtaining classroom resources to provide engaging lessons that pique their interest and motivate them to learn. My students love project based learning activities and I believe empowering students through art is a great way to provide a visual and kinesthetic learning tool for them versus completing boring worksheets.
My Project
My students will use the poster boards, markers, paper, letters and glue to create campaign posters. The students will participate in a mock election in class to elect a president and vice president. This will provide a useful learning tool for my students to learn about the election process as we approach the upcoming election in November. As the year comes to an end, supplies have diminished and are scarce in our classroom. It is my hope that my students will become informed, productive citizens in our community. This activity will empower my students through art as they create campaign posters. I also believe this will provide an exciting way for them to become familiar with the electoral process and encourage them to exercise their right to vote.
Your donations will enable my students to use art integrated with economics and government to learn about the electoral process.
This project will greatly improve my students knowledge of how candidates are chosen during an election. It is important that they learn how to make informed decisions when voting for elected officials at any level. We are grateful for our generous supporters through DonorsChoose.org and look forward to sharing our project photos with you in the very near future.
