Bullying is a reality in today's modern schools. According to bullyingstatistics.org, in 2010 ninety percent of fourth through eighth grade students were reported as victims of some kind of bullying. Chromebooks will allow students to collaborate and learn about bullying in new and inventive ways.
I teach at a Title 1 school where greater than 60% of students are living in poverty.
My class is made up of diverse learners, including students who speak English as a second language and students with learning disabilities. It is the students living in low socio-economic status and students who speak English as a second language who stand to gain the most from technology. According to learningally.org, "when used the right way, increased access to technology has closed the achievement gap for minority students with special needs, students with limited English proficiency, and students identified as at risk.
My Project
Chrome books will provide students with digital learning experiences promoting discovery, equity, and creation. Students will use Chrome based applications and extensions in a collaborative fashion to create an inspiring, anti-bullying, multi-media video presentation. They will discuss, read, and write about bullying using the Chromebook extensions, 'Explain Everything' and 'Awesome Screenshot.' Related activities include role-playing, illustrating, and photographing ways to directly deal with bullying, including effects on victims. Students will have the opportunity to comment on bullying skits and images using the 'Voice Comments' application. Students will plan and write an informative speech explaining how to prevent and deal with bullying using the Chromebook extension, 'Read and Write.' Speeches will be digitally recorded. Student presentations will include images, text, audio, and video.
Chromebooks will increase student opportunity for inquiry based learning, and at the same time address the topic of bullying.
Students will create multimedia presentations that come to life. This technology will allow students to structure their thoughts, brainstorm, construct ideas, and problem solve. Chromebooks will allow teachers to teach, students to learn, and both to communicate in new ways. Collaboration through technology will have a profound impact on bully prevention.
