This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My special needs students have developed a love for writing and seeing their work published. Most of their writing this year has been typed and hung around the classroom. I want to continue to encourage the love for writing by providing them with the supplies needed to do so.
My class is a grade 3 and 4 special needs class.
They are talkers. I have gotten them to transfer all of that talking into writing. The school is a k-5 school that struggles in the area of literacy. There is a big push for writing across the curriculum to improve writing skills. My school is located in one of New York's tough neighborhoods where literacy is a struggle across many generations in some families. The students enjoy writing and sharing their stories and we want to continue having them do so.
My Project
In the classroom centers have been created where students do their writing, then edit and revise with a partner or teacher using the pens. They get so excited to use a pen. Then once the piece is deemed as complete, the students then take turns typing up their work, which is then printed out for them to hang in the class as well as take a copy home to their families.
We are in need of printing paper, pens and pencils.
Having these supplies will make a difference for these students because it provides them with the supplies they need to continue doing what they love. Writing and sharing their writing is important to them. Through writing they are building their literacy skills and overall becoming better readers as well when they have the opportunity to present their writing before the class and their parents.
