"What makes Superman a hero is not that he has power, but that he has the wisdom and maturity to use the power wisely." -Christopher Reeve
Reading books can teach us a lot about life. Reading enables us to learn about overcoming adversity and making positive choices. We develop our own super powers!
Every day my students read and write in school.
Some read and write because they love it, others because they have to. Teachers model best practices in reading and writing during mini-lessons. However, at the end of the school day, the students are on their own.
Our students' lives are so busy that sometimes reading or writing may not be the top priority. Extracurricular activities have limited the time some students would otherwise spend reading or writing.
The goal is that the children choose to read or write during their spare time. We want our students to become lifelong readers and writers. Reading and writing are not just subjects in school! We must inspire our students to read and write. But how? We need to enlist the help of a superhero. Perhaps Superman can help!
My students need an author visit for inspiration to read and write. Marc Tyler Nobleman will help inspire our students to want to read. Our students will see the amazing possibilities that reading and writing can provide.
My Project
On the first day of school, I needed a book that would motivate a reluctant reader. I browsed my classroom library and found what I was looking for. I picked up the book and delivered it to the student.
"Do you like Superman?" I asked.
"Of course!" the student responded.
I described Marc Tyler Nobleman's book Boys of Steel. During this book talk, I noticed other students listening in. Word quickly spread throughout the classroom and pretty soon, half of the class was lined up begging to read this book. Superman had inspired the students to read.
Several months passed, and now Marc Tyler Nobleman, author of Boys of Steel, is scheduled to visit our school. What started out with one reluctant reader has turned into an opportunity to inspire an entire school.
Marc Tyler Nobleman is an accomplished author with amazing stories to tell. His visit to our school will surely inspire approximately 500 students. His visit will include two assemblies and 5th grade writing workshops.
Approximately 500 elementary aged students will be inspired to read and write by a professional author.
Nobleman's visit will engage audiences during two school assemblies. The assemblies will focus on the creation of Superman. Nobleman will walk students through the writing process, describing tasks these students are asked to do on a daily basis. Nobleman will also conduct writing workshops for fifth grade students. These students will experience writing with a professional!
