Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students work hard to overcome a variety of barriers to obtain an education. Many students are reading below grade level but desire to make significant gains this year. The neighborhood that my school services is impoverished and my school lacks the necessary funding for their technology needs.
The bar has been raised!
Students all across the country are grappling with the rigorous new Common Core Curriculum Standards. My students are raising their own reading goals higher to match and are in need of advanced reading materials that are also engaging and relevant.
I want to bring the world and all of its differing perspectives into my classroom. Many of my students are not only unaware of issues on a global or national scale but have not yet engaged in debate about issues that will change and shape their own community. They need guided access to the world.
I have inquisitive eighth grade students. They are eager to work and learn. Our school is in need of reading material that is complex and rich. They need exposure to reading that will pose big questions about humanity and challenge their preconceived notions.
Our school is in the heart of the one of the poorest neighborhoods in New York City. 61% of the inhabitants of our neighborhood receive some sort of income support.
My Project
My students need access to laptops to hone their craft as writers. Many struggling readers are also struggling writers. With the Chromebooks, my students will be able to use the wide variety of Google products and services to produce excellent essays, stunning presentations, and manage their online portfolios.
Currently, our school does not have enough computers for our students' needs and many students are struggling to acquire the technology skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century.
To become better citizens, my students need opportunities to learn about our changing world. The New York Times Upfront Magazine delivers challenging, non-fiction articles that provide interesting debate topics and amazing insights into the global issues that will hook and engage my inquisitive students. The magazine provides them with perspectives and lifestyles that they have never had access to in the past.
This project will improve my classroom by allowing students to use technology appropriate to the 21st century.
They will be able to build their writing skills as well as become savvy tech experts. Their access to the great non-fiction writing within the New York Times Magazine will ignite their curiosity and that inquisitive spark within them will help to strengthen their reading skills.
