String it Up, Please! (2014)

My students need new strings to replace old, aging string sets, and an Apple TV, an efficient means to project and share a variety of digital materials.

My Students

The musicians in our orchestra classroom deserve to have access to quality instructional resources and materials. While we are happy to provide for each student who wishes to take part in our program, providing the requisite resources is a challenge, albeit one we have consistently met.

Our student-musicians have made a commitment to be a part of our orchestra program.

As such, I feel a very real responsibility to provide for each and every one of them the best experience possible - including providing a functional, adequately set up instrument and functional learning environment which includes basic digital capabilities. Since both the district and school site are unable to provide any budgetary support (i.e. there is no budget allocation at all), our community has become increasingly self-reliant in seeking solutions to our economic realities. Any financial support that can be provided to assist our hard working (and supportive) community is very much appreciated, and will immediately be put to use in securing quality resources and materials for our deserving student-musicians. This project will look very similar in structure to previous projects, as the challenge of continuing to meet the needs of our student-population has remained consistent.

My Project

The use for the requested materials is readily apparent. New string sets will be used to replace old or aging string sets on a variety of instruments. With over 100 students enrolled in our orchestra program (and nearly 275 students enrolled in instrumental music), replacing every set of strings as often as is suggested is unlikely. However, previous DonorsChoose.org projects have allowed us to make progress in this area. This project will enable us at school to continue to meet the needs of our students, with a particular focus on addressing the needs that are the most pressing. The technology requested (an Apple TV unit) will provide for our students a cost-effective means by which technology may be more successfully integrated into the classroom experience. With this technology, we will be able to share with all of our students a variety of digital resources and supports, including: digital strobe tuners, tone generators, instructional and/or sample videos, and streaming audio.

All students in our program will be positively impacted by this project.

First, new sets of strings will immediately be put to use in replacing old, aging strings which currently may be found on a number of our instruments. Second, every student in the program will benefit from enhanced digital technology. With this basic equipment, students will be able to access a variety of instructional supports, including tuners, metronomes, and digital audio and video. Thank you for your support!
