Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day in my class starts with independent reading. Many students don't even wait for the bell to ring--they are already reading before class even starts. I encourage students to find books that they love. I tell them, "It's ok to try 20 books before you find one that is right for you."

My students come from all over the world.

At the only public school in our city that serves recent immigrants to the U.S., my classroom represents an awe-inspiring amount of cultural and linguistic diversity. I teach 45 students from 13 different countries. Some have been in the United States for 3 years, but others have arrived only months ago. My students read voraciously. They read to find out what happens next in the books they fall in love with, but they also read to gain confidence as new speakers of English. Unfortunately, due to underfunding and a lack of space our school has no library. Teachers must buy their own books for students, hoping to efficiently match their interests and reading levels without spending too much out of their own pockets. I love my students and love their enthusiasm when they find a new book that they love, but it is difficult to keep buying books as they read more and more.

My Project

My students crave books that match both their interests as well as their reading levels. They are new to English and often require books that are written at more accessible levels. However, they are also teenagers who want to read about mature topics. The books selected for this project meet them where they are at, while appealing to their emerging and passionate interests. Specifically, books about soccer are hugely popular in my classroom. As a teacher of diverse international students, soccer is one thing that brings us together. Regardless of the fact that they return home at night speaking different languages, eating different foods and praying to different gods, nearly all of my students share a deep love for soccer. These books appeal to my students in very special ways.

Perseverance is a theme that is often addressed in great books, as in the stories of our students' lives.

Whether they describe their experiences leaving a family member behind in their native country, escaping conflict to find safety in America, or never giving up as they learn to adapt to their new environments, our students are constantly finding their stories reflected in those of the characters in their favorite books. These books will inspire them to learn, grow and continue reading.
