Writing for The Arrowhead, our school's newspaper, has opened up the world of journalism for many of my students. We are fortunate that it has just been made a class rather than an extracurricular, but we need the materials to make that work.
My students come from a high poverty rural area in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia.
Our school is the center of the community, and we are blessed to have such a family-like atmosphere in our building. I get the joy of seeing so many young people develop a love for reading and writing during their time with me.
My Project
My students are thrilled that for the 2013-2014 school year, our Newspaper Club will finally be made a class! To publish, we need a couple of digital cameras. These resources will allow my students to learn photojournalism skills and to illustrate their carefully written articles.
What would our knowledge of the world around us be like if not for journalism?
My students love seeing their work in print, and writing for the school paper has so many benefits. It connects them to their community and world in a very real way, and gives them an authentic outlet for their writing. It is pretty cool to be a published author in high school, and the school newspaper makes that feasible for any of our kids!
