Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my elementary school library, many students want to check out books of high interest subjects such as snakes, dogs, and cats, just to name a few. Our school library has very few books on these topics. The library budget for this current school year has been cut by almost 50%.

My school is in a high-crime, high-poverty area of an urban environment.

Despite some domestic challenges, my students, more than 800, love to visit the library and choose books that interest them. They look forward to their library visits in hopes of getting their hands on another great book.

My Project

The books that I chose are just three of the high interest topics most asked about by my K-5 students. Books about snakes, dogs, and cats are often asked for, but unfortunately, I don't have many of these books in my collection. Nonfiction reading broadens students' knowledge, especially if it is in areas of great interest to them. The more students read, the more they know.

As written above, the more students read, the more they will know.

Nonfiction reading is also an essential life skill. Decoding unknown words, learn how the text is organized which aids in comprehension of the material, and using context clues to develop critical thinking skills are just some of the benefits when students enjoy reading informational text.
