Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an urban high school. I teach 9th grade in a low income, urban district in Connecticut where there is a great focus on the 9th-grade transition to ensure that all freshmen are put on the path toward completing high school in 4 years.
Ninth grade is a rough year for many students because they have much more freedom and must start to navigate the demands of high school and being a teenager.
There is a learning curve for students as they begin to figure out who they are and how they fit into high school and eventually determine who they want to become. Some students really struggle with this and run the risk of becoming disengaged from the classroom and the school community.
As a teacher, I strive to provide a welcoming, comfortable environment for my students, especially because they are freshmen and are new to high school. This involves building strong relationships with my students and providing them with the support and materials they need to be successful and stay engaged.
My Project
Earlier this year, I requested snacks to help sustain my students throughout the morning. These snacks have been a lifesaver for many of my students and have helped keep students in my classroom because they know they can ask for a granola bar or package of fruit snacks. This has helped fuel my students throughout the day and especially in the morning when they may have three or four hour long classes in a row before lunch. It is also great to be able to give students a package of crackers or a granola bar to eat on their way to a sports practice or club meeting at the end of the day.
Students have become used to coming to my room and asking for a snack and therefore, the snacks I received at the beginning of the year are beginning to run low.
I am requesting more snacks to help us get through the second semester so that my students can stay focused and continue to be successful in my class and their other classes. If students are hungry, they are not able to focus on their school work and be engaged or successful in class.
