Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Imagine experiencing the food chain by putting together the bones of a vole or small mouse after it fell prey to an owl. Close your eyes and envision tracking a wild animal through the snow, using its tracks as a guide. This project will allow my students to do these things!
My students represent a diverse group of PS through 5th graders in Northeast Washington, DC.
Our DC Public School is one that truly values inquiry and learning by doing and our students continue to rise to our expectations every day. From the youngest preschool student to the oldest 5th grade student, all receive science instruction in the classroom and practice in Habits of Mind using their Multiple Intelligences in our Think Tank program. Our unique school is a special one, with over 300 unique and eager learners who thrive on hands-on, inquiry-based learning.
My Project
Living in a large city, we often experience the animal world through videos, texts and periodic field trips. The Animal Track Cards, imprints, and owl pellet dissection kits will allow students to step into a new level of understanding of the animal world--one that is not easily seen in a city context. Students will be able to experience the food chain not through a text, but by dissecting real owl pellets, putting together the bones of prey and determining the feeding patterns of the mysterious owl. In addition, students will be able to create, touch and explore animal tracks through imprint stamps, a tracking game and stamps. Through these they will "track" a variety of species and learn to look carefully at the natural world around them. These materials directly relate to our science standards, but allow us to step outside the textbook and into the natural world... all while sitting in the middle of a major city.
This project is so important because it brings to life exciting aspects of nature inside the classroom.
Not all of my students have had the chance to visit locations where owl pellets can be found, or bear tracks can be followed. Hopefully these materials will inspire them to set goals to visit these places in their lifetime and possibly even choose a career path that will lead them there.
