My Students

My goal for my students is to encourage them to be life-long learners. Many students come from families who have not been able to attain a high level of education. It is very hard for them to assist their children with the many tasks now expected by the Common Core standards.

My school is a Title 1 school in a low socioeconomic area in Queens, New York.

There is a large variety of cultural backgrounds. Many students who enter the school have come from areas where education is not a priority for many school children. Many are English Language Learners. The students enter school eager to learn. My school promotes supporting emotional learning, as well as academic learning.

My Project

The heavy duty pencil sharpener is to be used so that all students are ready to write first thing in the morning. Mechanical pencils are not allowed and the small plastic ones are often inefficient and distracting. The write-on wipe off boards will be used during interactive parts of the Common Core Math program we are using for instruction. These boards will support all learners as they contain a number line and array grid. This will scaffold my struggling learners as well.

Students will feel supported by the knowledge that not only are their parents and teachers invested in their learning, but people outside of the school community also care.

This will increase their motivation to make good use of the materials.
