Set Sail for Learning! - A Field Trip to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary

My students need help paying for a portion of the bus transportation cost to experience an incredible STEAM field trip to explore the ecology of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

My Students

We have studied about the plants, animals and ecology of the Marine Sanctuary. We have performed an ecology project to help our community and to help keep our watershed clean. We are now ready to set sail on an incredible voyage of learning. But, we still need to get there. That is where we need help paying for a portion of the bus transportation cost for this field trip.

Our students have had limited exposure to the places more than just five miles from home.

We are a low income school in San Jose, which is a major urban area in California. My students are so anxious to learn and ask tons of questions. A typical day in the classroom involves videos and pictures of places we are learning about. This field trip to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary would be a chance to actually GO to a place we are learning about. Our fifth graders are an amazing bunch of explorers who are excited about learning about science, and especially about the natural world around them.

My Project

This field trip will let loose these inquisitive minds to get a hands-on experience of the ecology of our region and the Marine Sanctuary off of our coast. We will be sailing aboard a catamaran courtesy of the O'Neill Sea Odyssey program as my students learn marine biology, ecology, and navigation. They will put in practice all the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) skills we have been learning throughout the school year. They will take samples of plankton to study, they will see firsthand the fragile ecosystem of the sanctuary, and they will learn how they can be ambassadors for and stewards of the environment.

Your support will inspire these students of limited means to believe in their unlimited potential in continuing their education and leading them to future careers.

Your donation to this project can be the difference in making the dull one dimensional learning of a textbook become the most engaging three dimensional hands-on learning experience possible. Please make this contribution to the future of these students, and to the future of our planet.
