About My Students

Our students are 6 diverse future leaders with a desire to learn how to make our world more just and sustainable. They are young but have already caught on to the idea that they have the power to create positive change. We (their teachers) are so excited to volunteer with these 6 stellar students!

Now, more than ever, our city's public school students need to experience other cultures and learn the value of global collaboration to create a better, safer, and more sustainable world. Our students are not your typical high schoolers; they have chosen to work and study during their spring break because they want to learn what Dominicans are doing to make their communities more fair and healthy. This project stems from their desire to be global citizens and to experience what it is like to live in a community vastly different that their own. They are curious about how other countries address the same problems we have here and are motivated to work together for solutions.

Our students will be learning about sustainable practices and getting hands on experience in implementing environmental initiatives. Through this work, they will develop and practice real-life problem-solving skills. For example, they will be helping build efficient and clean-burning stoves that will reduce deforestation. Our students will also develop their teamwork skills by working in a group to solve a common problem. They will put their heads together to fundraise and organize the program. Then, when we get to the DR, they will collaborate with locals and other volunteers to in moving towards the common goal of a more sustainable world.

In Their Own Words

Our project will allow us to learn about environmental sustainability through service. Environmental sustainability affects everyone’s health and future. Our goals are: -to contribute our ideas & knowledge -become more environmentally aware then share what we learn back home -lend a hand in sustainable development projects Lastly, this project is a wonderful way for us to step outside of our comfort zone. Trying new food, using Spanish & meeting locals are all experiences we look forward to.

We are all dedicated leaders in our community. We lead by example. We try to be our best selves and work to make our city a better place for everyone. Now we would love to use the talents and skills we have learned in school to the international level. We want to make a positive difference in the global sense. Our shared goal is to bring everything we learn and experience from the DR back to our city and share our knowledge and experience with peers and community.

This project is important to us and our school community because it brings together passionate learners and leaders who really want to make a change in the global community. The challenge our project addresses is how to reverse the damage we’ve caused to the environment and how to adopt more sustainable habits for the future. By collaborating with people from all over the world, we can incorporate our ideas to preserve the beautiful world we all share.
