My Students

We are teaching in an ever-changing world. Our students demand information, not in minutes, but in seconds. Technology influences everything we do; how we entertain, how we communicate, how we live our daily lives...but what about education?

I am a high school Biology, AP Biology and Chemistry teacher from a large urban fringe school district where for many of my students, due to the economy, have limited opportunities to reach into this digital world.

Our school has a large percentage of students on free or reduced lunch and often funds are short at home, as well as in the classroom. I want to be able to give my students the world, but I only have the resources to give them a slice of it. This is where you come in! I believe that bringing technology into our classrooms is a vital part of helping our students, both academically and socially. A MacBook Air notebook computer would do just that, allowing my students a window into this digital world.

My Project

I feel that we need to create opportunities for students to reach into the future and make technology a vital part of our educational setting. We are no longer in an era of books and rote memorization. Instead, our eyes have been opened to a variety of methods which ask us to engage students, creating moments that “spark” and make them want to go out and tell the world what they just learned. My students yearn for these opportunities and I want to provide it to them. In our district, the use of technology is extremely limited, and to truly utilize these resources to the fullest extent, it takes funds and supplies that are beyond our means. In order to light my students’ fire of interest and capture teachable moments, it needs to start here. We will be able to interact with online labs, scientific articles, and make their textbook come alive with videos, demonstrations or interactive resources. My students’ educational experience will compound with each and every use.

I want my students to be able to graduate, able to carry skills learned through new and innovative techniques that started with lessons and ideas from my class.

With your help, my students will embrace technology in our classroom and use it to strive for a better tomorrow; into college and beyond. With the use of this MacBook Air in my classroom, I will be able to connect technology with my students to make real-world connections that would not normally come from just a textbook alone.
