Room to Learn

My students need a carpet for whole group instruction time that all of my Kindergarteners can sit on at one time.

My Students

Every morning our day begins with the whole class meeting at the carpet area to start our instructional day. We also use the carpet area for our brain break time and small group work throughout the day.

We are a class of 22 diverse, inquisitive 5 and 6 year olds.

We come to school excited to learn every day. We love finding new ways to express our ever growing knowledge. "Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin We are a school that values each of our students for their individual talents and makes every effort to provide any kind of support we can. Some of our students come to school not speaking or understanding the English language, some of our students have had limited exposure to technology, and some have never held a pencil. Students learn and discover their abilities in a non-threatening way when they are able to work together in a classroom community that supports each other's growth.

My Project

In Kindergarten we spend the majority of our day sitting at the carpet. This is where we have our morning warm-up songs. Each day we have calendar time and move into a short brain break. Our brain breaks are active times that require us to spread out to be able to stretch our arms and legs. Because we spend so much of our time at the carpet area, it is important that we have our own space free from others having to touch us because we don't have enough room on the carpet. We also use the carpet during the day for small group work as well as partner work and a reading area.

A large carpet for our carpet area will allow ALL of my students to be able to sit at the carpet and have enough room to be comfortable and free from others touching them.

Currently 4 of my students have mats outside of the carpet. The students have to sit on the mats because there is not enough room for them. I want all of my student to be able to sit together and feel like they are part of the group and not an outsider. It is extremely important for Kindergarteners to feel included.
