Creativity combined with hands-on learning is life long learning. My students love to create, construct, imagine, and program using technology. Engineering is their "thing". As a quote by John Dykstra states, "I like engineering, but I love the creative input."
My school is an inner city, Title I school that serves students from grades Kindergarten through seven.
Our school is in its infancy stage, being only three years old. As we grow, we work hard to provide our students with opportunities that are worthy and will enlighten their world and give them experiences that they would never normally have. As an Arts Integration and Expeditionary Learning school, our students tend to be very creative. But not all are musically, artistically, or linguistically gifted, yet very creative mentally and physically. We have been able to channel their creativity through engineering and robotics experiences.
My students need the new and improved LEGO Mindstorms robot kit and guide, and EV3 in order to competitively compete in the FLL Robotics competitions. Well over eighty students in grades four through seven apply and are interviewed in order to be selected for a cherished place on one of our two FLL Robotics teams. The maximum of twenty students can be selected, and so there are too many children who meet the criteria and are eager to take part that must be turned away. With this added LEGO Robotic kit (the newest version, EV3) we will be able to have three FLL Robotics teams and allow ten more students to participate in the program. In only our second year of participating in FLL challenges, one of our teams made it through City-wide competition, through State qualifiers, and to the State Championship. Our second team won first place for their project design. This just goes to show that we are doing great things and that our students thrive with the technology and equipment. It is our goal for ALL of our teams to make it to the State Championships and at one of the teams be able to go to Nationals.
This project will allow another team of students to use their creativity, knowledge, technological skills, presentation skills, and curiosity to take steps to become our nation's next engineers and scientists.
