We have recently started a robotics program. We had 22 students sharing one laptop to program the bot. We are looking to expand our equipment to make the program available to even more students!
My students LOVE going to the computer lab.
We engage in fun, interactive lessons that enhance the course of study in the classroom.
We are a Title 1 school in the Metro area. Our numbers currently put us at around 75% free and reduced. I have an incredibly diverse set of students. All of them are eager to learn, and there are many who do not have regular computer access at home. We are striving to get them engaged in 21st century skills by making it relatable and fun! We have received a grant for our robot, but we need another laptop to enable the students more time to actually work on the coding.
My Project
The primary function of the laptop would be to enable an additional group of students to write and debug code for the robot. When not being used for writing code, the laptop could be used to help support our extra large classes.
We have almost 100 fifth graders divided into three classes. Each homeroom has approximately 32 students. Our computer lab is only able to accommodate 28 students. With this laptop, we will be able to get one more student working on 21st century skills. We will use them for a variety of interactive lessons including computer coding.
We have to take turns on who gets to miss using the computers during our scheduled computer lab time. It's so difficult asking a child sit out a turn when they are so engaged with an activity. Donating to this project will help us have necessary equipment to run the classroom effectively.
The demographic makeup of our school is incredibly diverse.
The majority of the students we support are grossly underrepresented in the field of computer engineering. Giving them opportunities to begin earlier will help us open doors that they might not have realized were there in the first place!
