Having new fun music that provides tools to teach elements of music, along with instrumentation keeps things exciting for everyone while learning music, science and math. The use of pitched tubes and bells offers differentiation and immediate feedback for teacher and student self assessment.
My students attend a large Title one school.
They come from a diverse backgrounds, but all share the love of music. I have had the pleasure of teaching at the same school over 17 years and love watching students build on musical skills each year. Music for some is their favorite subject. For some, music is a place where they can express themselves in a positive way and learn that they CAN do it.
For my students that go on to play in middle school band, they carry the information learned at the elementary level. I want them to enjoy learning with fun, new, and creative resources. Others will not continue music after elementary school. I am passionate about making the most of the six years they have in elementary school a positive and successful learning experience.
My Project
I am requesting a resource that I have used in the past with great success called MusicK8. The subscription includes five issues, each with several songs and instrumental activities. Boomwhackers are plastic color coded pitched tubes. They allow students to break down components of music one note at a time. The bell set is colored to match the pitches of the boomwhackers. Students can work in groups, each having a specific pitch. Assessments, both teacher, peer, and self, will be easier knowing what specific note you are playing.
Eventually, students can move to a xylophone for a more cohesive experience playing several notes. Using the bells and tubes offers many levels of differentiation to meet the needs of all levels of students. Students can also work on higher level thinking skills by composing with colors, then transferring to pitches.
This project will make a difference as it offers great music and instruments for students to use in music class.
By singing, following music and playing instruments, students of all learning styles will benefit.
