My Project
Help us launch a Restorative Center for students assigned to in- school suspension. This center will allow students who have been identified as having behavioral challenges, mental health concerns, or struggling with substance abuse to engage in activities that foster self-awareness and practice de-escalation techniques. In the past, students assigned to in-school suspension are often sent to a room in which they are prohibited from talking or interacting with others. These students arrive angry, frustrated, anxious or emotionally withdrawn. They return to their classroom without learning any strategies or self-reflection techniques to reduce what becomes repeated infractions. Our center will be a response to these behaviors.
We want to foster a nurturing environment, not a punitive one.
Displaying self-affirmation posters will help us promote a positive, colorful environment. Board games and puzzles will be used to assist students who need to calm down before engaging in a conversation. Those feeling anxious can use sensory tools that promote self regulation. With adult intervention, these students can then engage in a therapeutic conversation by participating in social-emotional card games to develop emotional intelligence and promote a growth mindset.
