My Students
Imagine your childhood without books at home? There are some children in our classroom that can imagine this because in their home, there are not any books. Therefore, I make it my personal goal to read as many books as possible across all of the subjects, in hopes of inspiring their inner reader!
My scholars live below the poverty line.
Their families have chosen to bring their scholar here from surrounding failing schools, in order to give then another chance at succeeding. Most of my students come to me, two to three grade levels behind and lack the resources needed at home to support learning in the classroom. Our school is a college preparatory school. We focus on giving our scholars the opportunity to get to college by teaching an arts infused rigorous program. In addition to catching them up academically, we help mold them into responsible, independent, hardworking, lifelong learners. We teach and equip them with the tools needed to achieve their goals regardless of what they face at home. In the end, I find that my students are some of the most hard working young people you will ever meet.
My Project
My students will use the books in multiple ways. They'll have the opportunity to read them at their leisure during silent reading time, as well as use them academically. This year our focus is literacy, so I'll use these books to show them that literacy is necessary, even in math! We'll take time to use comprehension strategies to help them understand what their reading, as well as use the books to peek their interest in a new math standard. Teaching math through literacy will also give students the chance to connect to the learning target in a nontraditional way.
Having these books as resources will improve engagement in the classroom, and as a result; increase student scores.
I'll also use these books to impact literacy growth. As we read them, I'll help them make growth in the area of reading comprehension. We'll review one of the six reading strategies being focused on in our building each time we read a story. They'll learn to that reading is cross-curricular and necessary in all areas of learning.
