Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Welcome! I teach a primary (K-2) self-contained multi-needs special education classroom. There are typically 6-8 students. Every day we work on becoming more independent in academics, personal skills, and life skills. We celebrate every step forward no matter how big or small!
My students have a wide range of needs and abilities and it makes every day a unique adventure.
Our school building is much older and therefore our furnishings are older or second-hand. My aides and I spend a lot of time figuring out ways to adapt what we have in our classroom to assist our students and be functional in our day to day activities. In order to move forward in creating a classroom that is geared towards the TEACCH methodology we need materials we simply do not have.
My Project
My students are working on becoming independent and the best way for me to help, along with our curriculum and dedication to IEP goals, is to provide an organized and accessible classroom that meets all needs. The classroom should be clearly laid out so the students know where they are supposed to be and what they’re supposed to be doing. There should be adequate space for independent and group work and the work areas should be arranged in the least distractable setting. The work areas should be clearly marked so the student can independently find their way to different locations within the classroom independently and the boundaries within those areas should be clearly marked. Color coding as well as defining the spaces with walls will help us achieve this goal.
By color coding and setting specific work space boundaries with these walls, we hope to push our students into a whole new experience in learning.
Unfortunately it is an expensive step we need to take, and hope to meet our goal to get started for this school year!
