Musical chairs is fun, but not when it comes at the expense of learning. Right now, I do not have chairs to seamlessly pull small groups during the day to provide academic services for Special Education.
I teach in a high-poverty area in a public city school.
My first graders need grit to face daily challenges both in school and their surroundings. A typical day has my students focused on language, math, Spanish, and science, while also receiving intervention services in reading, speech, occupational therapy, and more.
The students I'm working with this school year receive special education services both in the classroom and in an intervention space. I work closely with the general education teachers to make sure EVERY student receives the support they need. I'm grateful to have a table in the classroom in order to provide an appropriate learning environment for these young first graders, however we need chairs to sit in to do our best work! Several of my students receive Occupational Therapy and proper seat height while growing our writing skills is crucial. Chairs would help support their developmental growth in the inclusion classroom setting. Thank you so much for thinking of my students and contributing to my their success in an appropriate learning environment.

I believe it also sends the important message that their learning is just as important as their peers. A seamless transition to our table, without the distraction and time spent moving furniture, supports this message and my core belief that ALL children deserve a quality education.
