My Students

We are Makers, but sometimes the parts we need don't exist...yet.

Our school is a full Title I school, with nearly 2/3 of our students living in poverty.

Our area is largely rural, but within reach of urban areas. Due to this geography, we have ongoing partnerships with regional Makers and have a Maker Club at our school. This allows us to expose students to career options they may not have otherwise considered. Many of our students struggle to learn math and science, as evidenced by our most recently released standardized test scores. Unless they can clearly see how the learning connects to their lives and their futures, the math remains abstract. This continues a cycle for our students whose parents also struggled to learn math. Because of this, we use Making as a vehicle for building community around math and science. Making allows our students a creative outlet and it gives purpose to the math and science we ask them to do. Making also helps communication skills, as we expect students to share their learning with others.

My Project

Our students will use the MakerBot resources in several ways. First, they will design and print simple tokens to give to incoming kindergarteners and transfer students as a way to welcome them to our school. In order to design the tokens, they will learn to use digital art tools. They will also work with measurement, scale, and money as they calculate the item cost for each token and the number of tokens needed. Finally, they will use persuasive skills as they decide which token to print. Secondly, our students will work with local Makers and students from regional community colleges to print components for a Robohand project. Robohand is a project that uses 3D printed parts to build prosthetic hands at low cost. This will help our students to learn about human body systems, particularly interactions between skeletal and muscular systems. Students will also develop literacy skills by blogging about their collaborations. Most importantly, it will offer our students leadership roles.

Donations to this project will put cutting-edge technology into the hands of students whom research shows are least likely to have access to it on their own.

It will provide students with understanding about career pathways and allow them to develop leadership roles. Through Robohand, they will be able to make a real difference through community service. Finally, this project will give them a concrete purpose for understanding the math and science they learn in the classroom.
