My Students

Third graders use up more pencils than you would ever imagine!

I have 19 students who use pencils the entire day.

We use them for every subject and every activity. I provide the majority of the pencils to my students. They are asked to bring in a supply at the beginning of the year. Many do not bring in any or go through their supply within the first few weeks of school. A pencil seems like such a little need but if you don't have one readily available to use it can be very difficult!

My Project

We currently have a manual sharpener on the wall of our classroom. It is constantly falling apart and the students are unable to put it back together. It also sharpens the pencils funny and they are not always able to be used. To sharpen the pencils each morning with the manual sharpener takes me a very long time. The school does have an electric sharpener in the copy room but it is difficult to find the time each day to travel there and sharpen pencils. It is also used by the entire building so it is often being used. We have also had a few times where it stops working and we have to wait for a new one to be ordered and shipped.

This donation would help because my pencils would always be sharpened!

I would have no reason not to have sharpened pencils each day! I could also assign a student to the job of pencil sharpening. The students could be more responsible about sharpening their own pencil and not having to wait for me to sharpen it.
