A new feature of our school's morning announcements this year is the addition of Poetry Friday. In preparing the students for a switch to common core standards, this year I wanted to include poetry. However, we have only 20 books for the 3rd and 4th graders to borrow.
I have approx.
625 students in grades kindergarten through 4th grade. I see 30 classes over a 6 day cycle. I have a wide range of students, including some on the autism spectrum, learning support, gifted, and 2 severely handicapped classes. All these students borrow materials from the library.
My Project
Currently the only poetry books we have are by Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky, who are great authors, but with limited quantities. Since the advent of Poetry Friday students are coming into the library looking for poetry books, only to be told they are all checked out. Additional poetry books by different authors will enrich the students literary experience and hopefully help them develop an appreciation for poetry.
Students are asking for poetry books and I have a limited supply.
There is no neighborhood library for these students to borrow books from. By having additional poetry books, I will be able to get books into the hands of my students.
