This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The days of whole group teaching have come and gone! Research has found that the one size fits all approach of teaching does not benefits students today. My students are in need of additional supplies for their workstations which will enable me to meet them at their individual academic levels daily.
I teach in an urban Title I district in Texas.
My school is located is a very low socioeconomic area that does not always have the best resources available to the families who call it home. Despite where my students live, they come to school daily eager to learn!
My class consists on 22 energetic students, 10 Kindergarten and 12 Pre-K students. Our classroom is extremely diverse since we are an ESL class with students from several different ethnicities who speak several different languages!
My Project
My students need Hot Dots pens and cards and books on CD for our listening station to engage them during workstations.
I am hoping to engage my students with a new technology called Hot Dots. This system is a new type of electronic learning that provides students with instant feedback to their learning. Students select cards from a subject area and then answer questions with an electronic stylus that immediately tells the student if their answer was right or if they need to try again.
This will be a key component to my students' independent and group work time as it will allow for individualized instruction so that students who have masted one topic, such as addition, can move on to another harder topic, such as subtraction, while other students continue to work on the topic they have not yet mastered.
I am also requesting several books on CD. Last year my school was able to purchase a CD listening center; however, we did not have the funds to purchase any books on CD to use with it. These books on CD will help my students with word tracking and will also open their world to inspiring and fun literature!
With these materials I will be able to actively engage my students during independent and group centers.
I have found that my students are highly motivated by technology and choice and retain a great deal of what they are able to practice with electronic devices. While using technology grabs the attention of the students, these materials will make their learning appropriate on each individual level which will make their learning time as valuable as it can be.
