Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students walk down the calls and wave at everyone. They smile and say "Hola Sra. W!" We understand each-other because we all grew up the same-our parents didn't speak English and we became the household translator when we learned English. They are just becoming that for their family.

Rowena Chess is a high-need school.

We have over 90% Hispanic, low-income, low-performing, English Language Learners who attend class every day. Our students need a distraction at recess to be able to get their energy out of their system so they can focus in the classroom. They need to be able to learn how to behave properly outside so they can use all of their learning minutes in class. They need to be able to function as a team and play sports so when they grow up they can also work as a team at their future job. We are in need of playground equipment in general because we are located in the middle of the city and our equipment keeps getting stolen or broken. Its hard to replenish something like a ball each year, it's so much easier to ask for paper and staplers that balls. The community needs to understand that simple things like playground balls make such a huge difference for little kids in all areas of their lives, including education, behavior and physical activity. .

My Project

I hope to use a portion of the balls to replenish the balls we don't have for playground use. The smaller kids can use the kickball's for their recess time so they can form groups or the duties can just monitor their use. The older kids can use the soccer balls to form teams. The 5th graders at this school have a behavior problem and they love soccer. The administration has taken some of their soccer privileges away because of it. I hope to use these as a behavior incentive program where they have to behave well all week and they get to check in and out the soccer balls according to how well their behavior has been. I know how much sports helps with team building and how important it is to have kids just "let it out" on the playground. They really need to focus in class because our test scores are in the bottom five in the whole district and we are already one of the lowest-performing districts in the state.

I love all of the kids in this school.

I've lived in this city my whole life and I would love nothing more than to help out as many kids here as possible. With such a simple thing like playground balls, the kids will be happier, healthier, smarter, more productive and better behaved. They will take pride in their behavior for once and we can turn it around from punishment to incentive.
