My Students

Special needs students in my elementary self-contained room integrate with non-disabled peers daily to extend their learning and train to reach Common Core Standards like all other kids. Special needs students often need special materials and lessons to be engaged and active learners.

Our students are moderately to severely challenged K-6th graders who learn, grow, and communicate in extraordinary ways including vocally, gestural, and with sign language.

Explaining concepts and retaining knowledge is especially challenging for them. Students engage longer and retain language and math concepts better when paired with items promoting their creativity, collaboration skills, and which lead to their critical thinking skills being further developed. Nonverbal children such as these learn best with items in their hands to explore, build, and think about. Play-Doh and other art supplies fill a huge need to fully engage and structure lessons for maximum effect each day. Manipulative items are an especially important learning tool for these special kids.

My Project

The art and creative supplemental materials will be used in language, math, science, and story telling centers each day to help students engage, attend, and focus on critical skills of learning and retaining communication and number sense skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Creative problem-solving is explored through extended intervention and structured play involving student contact, peer mentoring, and collaborative planning and clean up activities. Teams are strengthened as they explore and share through fun and exciting materials and design tools which carry the lessons further and help students retain what they have learned longer. My students will strengthen vocabulary, team skills, experimentation, and connect to concepts in our daily schedule such as science, vocabulary building, ecology, and mechanical orientation using these materials.

My students need modeling clays, cutters, tools, and 'wiggly' stools and letter/number stamps to engage learners in creative problem solving skills.

The availability of extra supplies that often get used up during the year is so important because my students can't access their learning without them. All students deserve to have educational materials that excite and propel them, but for my extremely challenged special students such things are critical to a good education and student engagement.
