Communication is the key to getting needs met, becoming independent, making friends, and interacting with others. Many Autistic children are unable to communicate with their voices and depend on pictures to make communication possible.
My class is an Autistic preschool class consisting of 6-9 students who range in age from 3-5.
Many of them are non-verbal with communication, social, and motor issues. A large number of autistic children depend on pictures to get their needs met as well as helping them to interact with others. Autistic children are very visual learners so we use a variety of pictures, charts and visual representations when teaching.
My Project
A typical day in my class includes 1:1 or 1:2 time where students work on their fine motor, academic, and imitation skills. They also have circle time where they learn to sit and attend to the teacher, practice imitation skills, and participate in a group setting. Most of the activities during our day are hands on activities which include many file folder games and visuals. The students are at school from 9-2 so having a wide variety of activities is important. We are work hard on teaching the students literacy skills, communication skills, fine motor skills and social skills.
This donation would help improve my classroom since we will be able to create new pictures for words students are learning.
As their vocabulary grows they need these words put into pictures in order to use for communication. The pictures made with Boardmaker are made specifically for Autistic children. The pictures are perfect for children on the Autism spectrum to understand and use with ease. Having this in our classroom would help children communicate more effectively.
