Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My classroom is in a trailer annexed from an elementary / middle school. 28 classes brave the weather to come to the art classroom every week. 5 classes come twice a week. I want the students to appreciate and be proud of the art they make in art class.
Kindergarten students are adorable and want to show off everything they know.
1st grade students try to contain their excitement about art but need lots of simple practice and routines. Second grade students are attentive and willing to try anything, confident and well behaved. Most 3rd grade students are chatty, annoyed, and distracted by each other, generally ashamed of their skills in art. I do my best to engage with their interests. Fourth grade students are generally trying to be super cool and pretend they already know everything, they need to be pushed a lot. Fifth grade students are great because none of the them give up. They usually try their best and are resourceful and help each other. I have ELL and mixed grade special education classes I enjoy as they challenge me to adapt lessons to their learning styles. There is a broad range of personalities and skill levels in all of my classes. The schools climate and culture is supportive and students are kind and respectful of teachers
My Project
Students will use these materials in art projects designed to improve essential skills and develop creative ability. They will use the paints and brushes for a variety of traditional art projects including landscapes, still life, portraits while studying the elements of art and principals of design.
The paints are high quality and are an essential resource to the art classroom as they will be easily stored and quickly distributed and cleaned up for multiple classes and grade levels. I envision the students being able to gather paints, brushes, and water and use these materials in a way that that challenges their skill level. They will learn to care for and use these materials properly and will advance their skill level by learning painting techniques and application methods including how to paint crisp edges, accurate color mixing, scumbling, washing and layering. The paper cutter will be used by me to prep for class projects efficiently by sizing and cutting paper accurately .
These materials will greatly improve the quality of student artwork, also improving their sense of pride and accomplishment in their art and creative ability.
My district is focused on ELA and math test scores. Art and music are left unfunded with depleted and old materials. Students now view the arts as the district does, devalue and unworthy of true effort. These materials will improve student confidence and encourage students to be serious about trying to improve their creative skills.
