I am the art teacher at a Northern Ohio charter school for students who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or Asperger's Syndrome (mild autism). Our school is a special education program founded on the principle that any child can learn given the proper learning environment and tools.
I teach 200 students at all grade levels (K-12) and I absolutely love my teaching assignment!
My students are creative and always open to learning new art techniques. Recently, I have had a lot of requests to learn about origami, the ancient Japanese art of paper folding.
I have some experience with origami, but I am lacking the proper supplies to teach the art form. Our students all regularly take martial arts classes to work on body control and maintain focus. Our Sensei teaches the students about Japanese culture within his class and the students are interested in learning more.
My Project
I would love to take advantage of this cross-curricular opportunity to combine their interest in Japanese culture and the arts. Folding the paper (and following step-by-step instructions) could be very beneficial to our students.
With this assortment of origami paper and beginner's guide books to the art form, I could deliver meaningful lessons to my special education students. I would love to expand on this new interest, and hope to see my students gain artistic confidence as they perform the ancient art form.
Please help my happy, huggable, and hyper students learn the relaxing art of origami.
As they take time to follow the step-by-step instructions, students will gain patience and a new art skill!
