"Once she knows how to read there's only one thing you can teach her to believe in and that is herself." Virginia Woolf
My school has been opened for 2 years.
Our school serves underprivileged kids that don't have the same kind of luxuries as you and I, that includes books. Some of the kids on our campus receive backpacks to take home that are filled with food to get them through the weekend. My students are a diverse group of passionate second grade learners. They fight their outside circumstances every day in order to grow academically and emotionally in our classroom community. Even as tiny second graders, they have dreams of college and success, and they know every moment is an opportunity to learn in order to get there.
My Project
As a teacher I feel very strongly in surrounding my kids with literature that captures their interest to read more and more. My kids are brilliant little people that teach me something new everyday. In Second grade kids read to perform a task using fictional and non-fictional texts, and learn about story elements, text features, and character traits. They have reading benchmarks that they need to meet by the end of each quarter and school year. At the end of the year, students begin their first novels. Decoding strategies usually end in second grade and reading more for comprehension. My students will use the chapter books I have asked for in reading groups to support their comprehension skills to be ready for third grade.
My kids thrive on books, reading opens a window to the world.
It helps children score well in a competitive exam. Reading does not mean reading only fiction, non-fiction, magazines, or newspapers. It also means reading an insurance policy, putting together a new computer, playing a new game or even qualifications for a job. In order to teach these kids to become adults in the real world, they first, need the tools to become fundamental readers.
