The last time you were asked to sit still for more than 10 minutes, were you able to do so without moving or fidgeting... with anything? Your fingers, paperclip, shoes, pen, paper, or table? We are asking kids to do this daily, often times for longer than 10 minutes. Please help us get moving!
For years, research has shown that the use of stability balls in place of regular chairs for seating increase in student's on task behavior, their achievement in fluency, comprehension, and various areas of math.
I teach 24 second graders, their ages range from 7-8 years old and they love to move. As of last year, 44% of the students that make up our population are military dependents. There is constant movement in and out of our schools and our numbers fluctuate from year to year. This year, I have 24 students in my classroom. Unfortunately, with 24 desks in our classroom, our space for movement is extremely limited. As a teacher, I know I have a hard time being asked to be still for too long of a period of time, so I have a hard time expecting my students to sit still for extended periods of time.
I need your help though so I can encourage movement, especially for some of my friends who constantly need to be moving or fidgeting.
My Project
Without a doubt, everyone, even those who are best at composing themselves, gets the wiggle worms at some point or another. Sit balls allow students the movement that their mind and body craves without make a huge disruption to others around them. This allows not only their peers to stay on task, but also helps them to stay on task as well.
By providing these balls for my students, they will be able to make the movements and motions their mind and body craves without causing a disruption to others in the class.
It is my goal to set my students up to be as successful as possible and I believe that these sit balls will make a great deal of difference for several students.
