"Can I print this?" is a question I often hear from students. "Sorry, we don't have any ink right now," is my response. Then comes the worst part. I have to witness the face that WAS full of pride slowly change to disappointment as they realize that they can't take their completed project home! My students need 5 ink cartridges.
My students live in a large urban area in Michigan and attend an inner-city school with a high poverty rate.
A few of them are fortunate enough to have a computer and printer in their home, but the majority don't have that luxury. For several of my students, their visits to my computer lab is their only interaction with a computer. They treasure the many projects they create during that time, especially since they know they have no other means of creating computer based projects.
As the computer lab instructor, I have the pleasure of working with students from Preschool through 6th grade and implementing a variety of lessons. I experience great joy as I watch a Preschooler illustrate a word with a B sound, a 2nd grader illustrate and explain their favorite part of a story, a 3rd grader paint an Earth replica for Earth Day, a 5th grader create a bar graph to display data, and a 6th grader create a Future Career presentation. Unfortunately, my joy is short lived because the students and I both know that each of these wonderful projects cannot be printed. Of course, we save their work, but that doesn't make us any closer to printing them - which is the ultimate goal. I can just imagine the smiles on my students' faces one day as they anxiously walk out of the lab with their freshly printed work in hand, eager to take it home to share with their family.
Wouldn't you be frustrated if you spent weeks working on a project and you have nothing to show for it in the end?
Everyone deserves to feel the pride earned from a finished product. Our school is fortunate to have 2 working printers...but we can't afford the ink. By donating to my project, you will add the missing element to my students' lab experiences.
