My Students

We have recently wrapped up an extensive unit on To Kill a Mockingbird. My kids were enthralled, enlightened, and touched by that classic, but we still have time for one last good read! Choosing lessons and activities for this part of the year can be tricky: we have to weave our reading sessions in and out of testing weeks, I must maintain an air of continued learning, and as always I have to grab and maintain interest from students who aren't ashamed to tell you they hate reading.

Had you spoken to my students earlier in the year, they would have proudly proclaimed that they hate reading (excluding Instagram comments, of course).

Now, I'm not naive enough to assume that I have instilled a love for reading in all of my students. However, as we reach the final months of 8th grade, those claims are not so heart-felt or loud. This was achieved thanks to authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and Harper Lee. How could I close out the year and exclude Steinbeck? After all, I still have a few more kids that need convincing!

My Project

It is important that my students not only identify themes, character traits/arcs, and literary devices, but also justify their claims and ideas with textual evidence. To most effectively foster and build on this practice, it is essential that the students have access to a copy of the book. In years past, I have always relied solely on the Kindle for PC and a Promethean Board when reading as a whole group. This year I began the task of building classroom sets for the stories we share throughout the school year. It may seem simple and irrelevant, but actually physically holding a book appears to have created stronger bonds between my students and literature I choose to introduce them to. I wish I had an eloquent explanation for this observation. But the best I can come up with is perhaps it just makes the experience feel more realistic (Old-fashioned: 1, technology: 0).

I teach a Newspaper course in addition to Reading.

Often times, my reporters are former students. This allows me an opportunity rare to teachers. You see, once the image of "Grade Keeper" is lifted, students become very candid about what worked and what fell flat. I was almost knocked over flat this morning when the homeroom bell rang and I was caught reading over my notes for this unit. If you could have heard the intense and independent discussions on this book, you wouldn't question the impact.
