Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I, inner-city school in Allentown, Pa where one hundred percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are leveling the playing field for our students so they have the same opportunities as students in affluent suburban schools. My students are amazing and always work hard. They deserve every opportunity I can give them to help them succeed! My students go above and beyond every day in their academics, oftentimes juggling academics, college work, and issues at home.
My Project
Our students in our Title I, inner city school are more often than not, reluctant readers. Some don't even know how to choose a book to read. We don't have a school library, so the English department is endeavoring to build their classroom libraries to encourage high school students to come and choose a book to check out and read.
Studies show that just 15 minutes of silent reading a day increases a students' vocabulary by at least 1000 words a year without any direct instruction!
We have challenged our students to read 40 books of their choice this year and I want to enhance my library to encourage them to read, take risks in reading and develop a love of reading. Many students are already started on their goal and I want to give them new books to keep them motivated and going.
