Everyone needs to know who they are and what their place is in the world! My students will learn by thinking about who they are in their family and what their place is in their community!
My students are first and second graders with physical, emotional and mental disabilities, but first and foremost they are children who are eager to learn more about the world!
They attend a large school in a diverse community in Brooklyn, NY. They are bright, clever, funny and love attending school.
My Project
The NYC Scope and Sequence sets out that first graders will learn about families and communities. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of texts in our classrooms that help teach us who we are, where we came from and what our place is in the world. We need books about different types of families (because there are so many!) and about workers in our communities.
These books give us an opportunity to study these subjects through literature.
I want my students to understand who they are and where they come from. We are part of such a diverse community here in Brooklyn and they have so many unique histories. I also want them to know that even though they are young and have their own set of challenges that they have a place in our community and a future!
