A 2008 study found that children require movement during a complicated mental task.
The children in the study, especially those with ADHD, fidgeted more when a task required them to store and process information rather than just hold it. This explains why students are often restless during math or reading, but can sit still while watching a movie. I support this research and am always looking for ways to help my students move while they learn.
I teach a dynamic group of 24 second graders in a Title I public school. My classroom is an inclusive setting with very diverse learners. I have students who are in constant motion and it is evident that they need to move to learn!
My Project
When you walk into my room during instruction, you will see students in varying places around the classroom because I believe in meeting students' individual needs. I am asking for 2 Hokki Stools, wiggle cushions, and a variety of sensory fidgets to allow my students to wiggle, and help them remain engaged and focused on learning.
This project will make a difference in my classroom because it will allow me to provide additional movement opportunities.
With more opportunities to move, my students can increase their focus, engagement, and learning potential.
